Signs of spring are popping up everywhere across our region, from pink cherry blossoms to the chirping of robins and spring peepers! We hope you enjoy the warmer weather and take time to relish the familiar spring semester traditions on your campuses. 

We are excited to announce that 2023-2024 TMA AmeriCorps VISTA member placement opportunities are now OPEN throughout the region! Please share these national service opportunities with your students, network, and community!

As we prepare for the end of the academic year, Transform Mid-Atlantic is planning a number of programs, convenings, and events. We are pleased to be returning to an in-person Community Engaged Practitioner (CEP) Retreat scheduled for June 2023, details of which will be announced in our April eNews - stay tuned!  

We look forward to seeing you this spring and, as always, our staff remains available for a phone call, Zoom meeting, or in-person visit to discuss how we can collaborate and support your work and contributions to the public purposes of higher education in the year to come.

2023-2024 TMA AmeriCorps VISTA Member Positions are Open! 

Through our partnership with AmeriCorps, TMA helps to alleviate and address poverty throughout the Mid-Atlantic region by placing AmeriCorps VISTA members within projects at member institutions and community-based organizations. Their work is focused on strengthening communities and developing their own skills as engaged leaders. Please share these opportunities with recent graduates and your network! 

AmeriCorps VISTA Members are eligible for the following benefits (*depending on site placement): 

  • Stipend/Living allowance
  • Health Coverage
  • Relocation Allowance**
  • Segal AmeriCorps Education Award / End of Service Stipend upon successful completion of service
  • Eligibility for the President's Volunteer Service Award (PVSA)

2023-2024 TMA / The Facing Project Partnership Program Proposals

TMA is proud to partner with The Facing Project to support its member campuses as they "face" complex and difficult community issues through dialogue and storytelling. Colleges, universities, and their community partners in MD, DC, and DE are encouraged to submit proposals to develop and host 2023-2024 projects by Friday, April 14.

North Carolina Campus Engagement Civically Engaged Student Webinar Series  Spring 2023

North Carolina student leaders will facilitate a series of webinar sessions on community and civic engagement best practices and lessons learned covering a range of topics - from grassroots climate activism to voting rights. The series is open to engaged student leaders from TMA member campuses. The series begins March 29 and will continue throughout the spring semester. 

 
 

2023 MD Civic Education Coalition Summit: Strengthening Civics for All!

Join students, educators, higher education representatives, and community-engaged partners from across Maryland for the Maryland Civic Education Coalition's third annual youth summit on Thursday, April 20th via Zoom. The theme of this year's event is "Strengthening Civics for All." Welcoming remarks will be given by 2022 TMA Civic Leadership Award recipient Ms. Lena Morreale Scott and United States Congressman Glenn Ivey.  Thematic roundtable discussions are planned for throughout the afternoon and evening. New Politics Leadership Academy Training Opportunities for Students & National Service Program Alumni

Answering the Call: Servant leaders put their community first. That’s why they are the key to revitalizing our democracy. Want to serve your community again through public service? New Politics Leadership Academy’s programming is designed for military veterans, national service alumni, and other community leaders who are considering entering the political arena. Participants consider if they feel called to political service by reflecting on their core values and who they are as leaders. Answering the Call is offered every spring and fall. Both programs are free of charge. Applications are open until today, March 22.

4 Institutions Selected to Participate in TRANSFORM 2040 Pilot Program  

Four of TMA's member institutions were selected to participate in the pilot TRANSFORM 2040 program this spring during Earth Week. Each participating campus will receive licensing and support to host a film screening and community conversation focused on the documentary film 2040

The goal of this program is to encourage dialogue, media literacy, and youth leadership & action around important issues and challenges. The following campuses and their community partners have been selected to participate: 

  • Allegany College of Maryland 
  • Frostburg State University
  • University of Maryland College Park & Terps for Change 
  • University of Maryland Eastern Shore & Princess Anne Main Street 

Campuses will hold the screenings & community conversations during Earth Week 2023 and TMA will host a panel discussion featuring the voices of regional, national, and global youth leaders later in the spring, which will be open to all member campuses.

TMA Leadership attends Leadership Forum on Democracy, Civic Learning, & Student Success

Last week, the TMA leadership team attended the CLDE Leadership Forum in College Park, MD hosted by Complete College America and the Civic Learning and Democracy Engagement Coalition, with support from the Lumina & Endeavor Foundations.  

The forum featured a rich dialogue curated by Dr. Martha Kanter, President and CEO of College Promise, and Mr. Charles Ansell, VP for Research, Policy, & Advocacy at Complete College America.  The three day convening included panels and discussions that featured representatives from several TMA member campuses, including Dr. Diane McMahon of Allegany College of Maryland! Dr. Ashley Finley, VP of Research and Sr. Advisor to the President of the AAC&U shared new research on "what works" in college civic learning. 

The team ended the week with an invigorating lunch conversation on philanthropic engagement with the Lumina and Endeavor Foundations.
